- For every room to be packed, bring the boxes and tapes to the room directly so that you don’t have to go out to fetch required items.
- Assign a color code with different colors for different rooms. This can be done using magic markers to mark the color on the boxes such as red color for bedroom items, yellow color for kitchen items and so on.
- Use the clipboard and make a note of all items packed in each room.
- While packing every room, start from packing less used items. Sporting equipments and collectibles are not used for everyday use and hence, they must be packed first.
- On each box, mark the color of the box indicating where the items go and then number the boxes. Also, write a description of items packed on the box. When you do packing in order, you will know that boxes with greater index numbers contain most frequently used items.
- You should complete packing a box fully before proceeding to the next box to avoid confusions.
- Your clipboard must be updated after each box is packed. You should include details such as number of the box and its contents. This list can then be used to check the boxes when they are delivered at the destination.
- Start packing well ahead of moving so that you can handle packing a few boxes everyday. This way, you won't feel exhausted.
- Essential items that you may need after moving to your new home immediately must be packed separately. If you reach destination before moving company, it is advisable to carry these essential items boxes with you. Packing high value items must be done with more care. While packing, you must be aware of the itmes you can't pack.
- Start with rugs and furniture. Dressers and other essential furniture must be unpacked first.
- Start unpacking other boxes starting from your kid’s room. Then, unpack your bedroom and finally go to kitchen.
- While unpacking, you should start with the boxes with largest number. As you have packed essential items at the last, these boxes must be unpacked first.
- Unpack a box, remove all items, and discard the box before unpacking another box.
While you are packing china and crystal, you will need the following supplies:
- Newsprint paper, Styrofoam peanuts, and bubble wrap.
- Dish pack box about 5.2 cubic feet.

Similarly, make bundles of similar sized plates and add the bundles to the box. Sides of the box and gaps must be filled with peanuts or newsprint paper. Large items must go the bottom layer. Between each layer, wadded newsprint paper or peanuts must be placed for cushioning.

The total amount of released value declared for the goods you move must be specified clearly. All items including high valued items must be valued properly and recorded on the bill of lading. When you just use the basic carrier liability option of 60 cents per pound of article, then you can't claim protection for high valued items shipped.

- Packing tape commonly used for packing and sealing carton boxes is called “PVC” tape.
- Newsprint paper is different from newspaper. Don’t use newspaper instead of newsprint paper. The ink from newspaper can't be removed if it gets glued to items stored inside the box. Also, newsprint paper must be used exclusively for wrapping and cushioning.
- Tissue paper for layering and wrapping delicate items.
- Bubble wrap is another material used for cushioning.
- Styrofoam peanuts are commonly used packing materials to protect fragile items while packing. It is lint free, dust free, light weight, safe and clean.
- Ziploc bags are required to pack small bits and pieces you may need to pack.
- Magic markers to label and index the boxes.
Just like packing, unpacking is also a tedious job. Even for a small family, unpacking moving boxes at the new destination is tiresome.
Moving expert author Sandy Payne in her book, Move your house has mentioned about how unpacking is daunting. She used ‘unpack all boxes at once’ strategy and underwent lot of packing difficulty. In her book, she has quoted that, "After weeks of confusion, long hours, and very intense work, we managed to get our house set up in time for the delivery of our second child."
So, before you start, plan your unpacking well.
- You should unpack based on the usability. Unpack your kids’ room so that you can do your work without worrying about your kids. Then, unpack bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.
- If someone is helping you with unpacking, let him or her know how you plan to unpack.
- Take a pen and paper because you may have to note down goods to be discarded and donated.
- Carefully throw away wrapping papers because you might have used them to wrap small items too.
- Start unpacking one box after another and unpack all boxes that belong to a single room before proceeding to another room. Discard the box after completing unpacking of each box.
- You need space to move and hence establish working areas.
- DVDs and other items to be stored must be stacked in a cabinet or you can use decorative boxes too.
- Start with unpacking big items like furniture before you proceed to smaller items.
- Estimate storage space required and purchase storage items well in advance.
- Place your things off-counter to free space available.
- Use storage products to store things that can't be placed in your kitchen.
- Unpack the fridge and stick a message board to pass on a message to your family. Include schedules, calendars, and other to do lists that everyone need to follow.
- Clean your bathrooms before you unpack bathroom items.
- Make sure that you don’t mix up the items of members of your family.
- Use note cards to note down simple tasks that can be completed in a few minutes. When you find time in between packing, do these tasks immediately.
- In every room, leave some space for traffic.
- Don’t exhaust yourself by working continuously. A few breaks won't harm you.

INTERSTATE MOVING TIPS
Irrespective of how many times you have relocated, moving is always a daunting task. Our moving tips will help you ease your burden of moving by helping you to properly organize your move.
General tips
- Moving companies will be at their peak working period during vacation months of summer as well as during month ends and beginnings. Other days are generally off seasons for moving companies. During peak season, moving companies will have a lot of orders and hence, all their moving equipments and moving staff will have to face heavy workload.
- Moving with children is far more difficult because you need to make your move as quickly as possible before term starts for your kids. This may be peak season for moving companies and hence, you have to face a higher moving cost.
- It is possible to move at a lower rate by organizing your move during off season times.
- When you have younger children, you can consider moving during off season times because they won't have much to lose if they join the school late. However, for teenagers and elder children for whom academic courses are halfway through, it is not possible to easily relocate to a new place in the middle of the term. Also, kids don’t like to move away from their friends and hence, you may have to deal with their emotional moving problems.
- The moving companies must be requested to come to your home to prepare moving estimates. The relocation consultant who comes to your home will make a visual inspection of things to be moved in your home to submit a written estimate. There are two different types of estimates – binding estimates and non binding estimates.
- Before even the consultant visits your home, you must do inspection on your own and decide on things to be shipped and not to be shipped. It is sufficient to let the inspector see the items you wish to move.
- Review the survey sheet with the mover. Cost of your move will be calculated depending on the number of items you move and special moving services required for moving certain things. You should have a good communication with your mover because you can make changes to the moving cost by discarding and adding items to be shipped.
- You can do packing on your own or get partial packing services from the movers. No protection is given for the boxes you have packed. During shipment, if some of the moving boxes packed by you are damaged, the driver can either accept or reject packing. If repacking is done by movers, you have to pay additional charges.
- It is important that you organize packing efficiently and complete packing before the moving day if you do your own packing. On the moving day, you will have lots of things to worry about and hence, complete packing before your moving date.
- Companies may pay for your relocation, but you should be aware of your expenses too.
- You need to get a written appraisal of antique goods to estimate their value. Don’t do any kind of refinishing to the wooden items you are moving because wood may be softened by the work resulting in damaging the furniture during the move.
- Don’t forget to inform the post office about your move. You have to give them your new address to which mails must be redirected.
Insurance
By law, the moving companies are liable for the goods they are moving. However, the actual liability varies depending on various factors. The movers can give you various insurance options and you must be aware of the pros and cons of each option. Many people who want to relocate don’t understand the importance of insurance and liability and they make mistakes often that may turn out to be very expensive. When you place a certain value on the goods shipped, you should ask your movers about the additional charges involved to protect those goods during transit.
Don’t ignore the brochures given out by your moving companies. You need to get a brochure containing information on valuing your household goods that are to be shipped. You should also read your rights and responsibilities brochure before you hire any particular mover.
You have to check the movers with better business bureau. This will throw light on the business practices of your movers. There are chances that your goods may be damaged during the move. In that case, you have to make claims within nine months after completion of the move. However, you should pay for the move completely even if goods are damaged during transit.
During the time of delivery of your goods, you need to usually pay cash on delivery after unloading. In cases of damages to your goods, movers must respond within 30 days after you made your claim. The issue should be settled within 120 days. The movers can choose to use arbitration to resolve issues. If you are not properly paid for your claims with arbitration, you can go ahead and take legal actions against your movers.
Limited liability
The movers are required to provide basic carrier liability as required by law. It is called the released value and you are not required to pay anything extra for this kind of basic liability. When movers move your household items, they must assume minimum liability of 60 cents per pound per item for the goods they move. This limit is specified for an interstate move. In the case of local move, the basic liability is 30 cents per pound of an item. However, with limited liability alone, you won't be compensated anything more than the standard basic liability in case of claims.
Considering you are moving a TV that weighs 10 pounds from one state to another state, you will be paid not more than $6 (10 x 60 cents per pound) when the TV is damaged. It is very obvious that this compensation is not worth it. Hence, before taking advantage of limited liability, consider the value of goods you are moving. Moving companies require you to sign the bill of lading for the goods you move with limited liability.
Declared value protection gives you some kind of additional protection for the goods you move because it is calculated based on depreciation value of the goods. However, this can no way come near the replacement cost required if the goods are damaged. When you ship 8000 pounds of goods with declared value protection, moving companies are liable for upto $1.25 times the whole weight of shipment. For your 8000 pounds shipment, you can't expect the mover to pay anything greater than $10,000 (8000 x 1.25).
Normally, declared value protection is considered as the standard insurance option when you don’t choose any other option. However, you have to pay to get this protection. Moving companies generally charge you $7 for every $1000 assumed by movers. You should ask your movers for the actual charge and rules. Hence, if the mover’s liability is $10,000, you need to pay $70 to get declared value protection. When an item that is worth $1000 is damaged, the mover will compensate for the damaged item based on the depreciated value of the item. You will certainly get more than $6 (limited liability), but you have to buy this option to take advantage of the extra compensation.
Replacement value protection
Full replacement value protection is the most lucrative option because you will be paid the full replacement value for the damaged goods. Thus, during transit if any item is lost, destroyed or damaged, the movers may either choose to repair, replace or settle in cash to restore the value of goods damaged.
If you want complete protection for the goods you move, you must choose replacement value protection. The total cost for this type of insurance differs with different movers. One way to reduce insurance premium is to opt for higher deductibles such as $250 or $500. However, this means that you have to pay the deductibles out of your pockets before the moving company can compensate you. You can't move high valued items along with normal shipments because movers are not liable for items that value more than $100 per pound unless otherwise they are explicitly listed in the shipping document. You must ask your movers about the high valued items.
You can make wise insurance decisions only if you know what options are provided by your movers. You must talk to your movers about goods, values and insurance options to make the right decision.
High value items
While moving your goods, you must be aware of items of high value and list them separately in shipping document. All items that cost more than $100 per pound are classified as items of extraordinary value. Some of these items are:
- Antiques
- Crystal
- Precious Stones or Gems
- Art Collections
- Currency
- Silver and Silverware
- Cameras
- Figurines
- Video Cameras
- Computer Software
- Furs
- Coin Collection
- Oriental Rugs
Aside from basic liability, moving companies are not required to pay anything more than $100 per pound per item for high valued items if they are not specifically listed. However, you will be compensated for the value of the items damaged if you have listed those items in the high value inventory sheet.
The total amount of released value must be declared for the goods you move. This amount must be calculated by evaluating value of all items including items of high values. This must be quoted in the bill of lading. Moving companies won't assume liability for high value items if you just buy the basic liability which is not more than 60 cents per pound per item. Also, you must be aware of the items that must not be packed.
Home owners insurance
If you have home owners insurance for household items, you should check with your insurance provider because some insurance policies will cover household goods even when they are moved. In that case, you don’t have to buy additional protection. However, you should not assume this coverage because many insurance providers will keep the insurance valid only if you live in that home. As you will be moving to another home, this coverage may be void.
In case your household goods are covered even when you are moving to a new home, you should ask the insurer about the amount of coverage provided and the items covered. Then only, you will know the value of protection given to your items. Also, note that this coverage is applicable only if you are able to prove that loss, destruction or damage is caused by the movers. Those items that are damaged because of insufficient packing done by you will not be covered even with valid home insurance.
Tips to choose the right movers
- Before even shopping for moving companies, find out the goods you will be moving. If there are items to be discarded, either donate them or arrange a garage sale.
- You need to know what moving services you require. You have to decide whether you need packing services from the movers. Other types of additional services that may be required must also be known by you.
- You should contact the movers through phone or email and get moving quotes. The moving company must be ready to send relocating consultant to estimate moving cost for the goods you intend to move. You have to take part in the valuation process along with the consultant and get appropriate estimates. You must also be aware of the validity of estimate given to you. You should also ask whether the estimate is a binding or non binding estimate. Don’t settle down for a mover who is not interested in coming to your home to evaluate moving cost. This evaluation can't be done just through telephone calls.
- It is important that you get involved with moving your goods. Unusual situations must be discussed with the movers before you hire them. When you cause extra workload for the movers even because of situations out of your hands, you will be charged additional fees. If there will be issues such as parking problems, street accessibility, road access or absence of stairs, you should talk about that with the movers in advance. If you can't let the moving van be parked infront of your home, you should reserve parking space in advance. The movers will charge you hefty additional charge if they have to carry the goods for unloading for more than 75 feet.
- If neighbors object to bringing trucks to the neighborhood, movers have to use smaller vehicles to complete unloading. In cases where elevators must be booked in advance and delivery is delayed due to such issues, you will be charged additional fees. If such unusual situations are not informed to the movers in advance, they won't be having necessary equipment to unload goods and hence, you will have to pay additional charges that may increase your moving cost.
- You should ask your friends and family for recommendations for moving companies. However, don’t just rely on these testimonials alone. Contact the better business bureau to know about the complaints made against the mover and the way they have resolved the issues. There is no possibility to find movers with zero complaints, but you should be satisfied with the way issues are resolved by the movers.
- Ask the movers for DOT license number because movers can't do business without a license. Also, you need to check two things:
- The movers must publish their tariffs and make them available for public.
- The movers must be ready to involve in dispute settlement and use arbitration measures to solve issues related to damage or loss of goods during transit.
- Get references from movers and talk to them.
- The movers are required to assume minimum liability for the goods they move. You should ask your movers about the basic liability and you should also ask for several insurance options. You need to be completely aware of the amount and type of protection given to your goods when they are handled by your movers.
- Ask as many questions as possible to your movers. The following list gives you an insight into information you may want from your movers.
- Do the movers charge additional fees when they have to use stairs during unload and I am not aware of this situation? However, you won't be able to get all information required for a correct estimate.
- What is the delivery date estimate and how will I be notified of delivery?
- If I do packing on my own, what are the standard packing supplies required to be used?
- What is the accepted mode of payment?
- When should the payment be completed? Is cash on delivery accepted?
- Will the movers do disassembly and reassembly of certain goods during loading and unloading?
- How will the actual cost be estimated for the goods shipped?
- What is the procedure to make claims for goods protected by liability insurance?
Moving is stressful
Moving is inherently stressful for kids. They might have their own plans and they have to get started to learn to adapt to the new environment. Your son might have just established himself in the football team and your daughter might have just met her first boyfriend. Little junior got accustomed to the teacher just now. And you want them to get going and help you with moving.
You need your children to accept the move and understand the benefits of moving to a new location. This guide will help you to prepare your children for moving.
Every yearm, over seven million families relocate and their kids cope up with the new environment. Even though moving is a tough ordeal, everyone will learn to survive after relocation.
Several emotions such as anger, sadness and confusion may be seen in your kids once you have announced about your relocation plans. This is perfectly common as kids, especially teenagers don’t want to get out of their circle. However, your kids will be benefited after your move, as is the case with other families.
Kids are very much concerned about emotions associated with move while adults consider physical moving to be stressful. However, your kids will learn to get along with new people and enjoy the diversity of the country.
General family guide
Moving is very challenging especially for a family with kids of different ages. Each kid will have his or her own emotional rollercoaster while the other adults in the family are more concerned about physical exhaustion while moving.
Involve everyone in the family
While you are planning for the move, make everyone in the family to participate in the planning the move phase. This way, you can get connected to your family and get their help for the move. Children must also be appreciated to participate in moving activities. You have to keep moving tasks and activities public so that others can alter their plans if need be.
When you are out in the new state looking for a new home, consider taking your kids with you for house hunting. However, not every one can afford this. You should ask your kids about the features they want in the home and neighborhood. If you are not taking your kids along with you, bring pictures of your new home to them so that everyone can consider relocation as an enjoyable process, eager to get to the new home.
If you are just moving to another city that is not far away, take the kids with you to the city. Let them explore the city and take them to various attractions like museums, parks and other areas of interest. This will motivate them to live in a new city. You can also take the kids to your new workplace and show the neighborhood in which you are going to live.
Tips to ease moving your family
- Inform your relocation plan well in advance. Everyone in the family should be given sufficient time to accept that they are moving.
- Tell them about the advantages of moving to a new place. Discuss opportunities available for them to grow further. Talk about big schools, bigger entertainment and other things that attract your kids.
- You should develop a positive attitude towards your move. At the same time, don’t be overly enthusiastic and increase the expectations of your kids. They will count on you and hence, don’t promise something that they can't get there.
- Even though you have inculcated positive feeling about your move, you will hear negative comments. Don’t lose your patience and try to convince everyone in the family to make the move.
- Don’t ignore the emotional needs of your kids. Listen to what they say and offer your help to make the transition as smooth as possible for others in your family.
- Make it a point that moving is a family event and everyone involved in planning the move can have fun.
- Spend some time with others in your family and answer questions of your kids. Just let them know that you are willing to get their suggestions and opinions on moving.
Reports say that Americans relocate once in 7 years. For most of the pets, lifespan is around 10-20 years. If you have pets in your home, you probably consider your pet as a part of your family and want to move to the new home with your pet.
Pets are animals and by nature, they are territorial. They don’t want to leave their home and move to a new place and accept changes in their environment. Any change in the habitat of your pet may seriously affect the mental and physical condition of your pet. Hence, you should consider the needs of your pet and attend to them to make your pet as comfortable as possible.
General moving guide for pets
Pets are very much accustomed to habitual activities and you should not break the habits of your pet too much when you are moving. If you will normally take your pet for a walk in the morning, don’t break this habit irrespective of your moving pressures. Continue to show the same concern and love for your pets.
During your moving process, you will have lots of work to do. Packing and moving will take up a lot of time and you may don’t have time to care for your pet. Once you have started preparing for moving, ask one of your family members to take care of your pet. Your dog will feel left out when no one listens to his needs. If you can't find a person to take care of your dog, hire pet care services for a few days when you are moving. There are a number of pet services in various cities of the United States and many of these services offer door to door services for pets.
The pet moving services will take your pets from your old home and deliver to the new home. You need to be more careful with your pet when you are moving because pets tend to bolt and escape, failing to accept the new environment. Keep all the doors closed and monitor your pet carefully in your new home until he gets used to the new environment.
On the day of moving, if your pet causes troubles and runs away, you won't have time to search because you will have your own travel plans. Hence, you should organize moving your pet with more care. It is better to get your pet delivered to pet care services in the destination and you can take your pet home after you have arranged everything in your new home.
Traveling with pets when you are moving
- If your pet is sick, postpone your move and don’t travel with pets with ill health. The strenuous travel may aggravate your pet’s health condition.
- According to animal welfare act, you can't transport pets that are less than eight weeks old with or without accompanying persons.
- You shouldn’t move your pet with other household belongings in a moving truck.
- In trains or buses, pets can't be carried with you. There is an exception however. Blind persons can take their dogs that help them to see.
- It is better to reserve tickets in a direct flight if you are traveling with your pet. As you let your pet travel in freight, he will be disturbed mentally and physically when he has to be transported from one plane to another. Also, you should buy insulated crate for your pet for flight travel so that he is not affected by the hot and cold weather of the travel.
Moving plants
Many people are attached very much to their plants. Just as you care for your pets, you care for the plants you grow. It is common that you may wish to carry the plants with you when you are moving. There are ways to safely and securely take your plants with you be it simple potted plants or garden plants. If you follow proper moving instructions for moving plants, you can prevent your plant from dying.
Packing is very important when you are transporting plants. Movers won't assume liability for the plants moved. Also, loading and unloading plants must be done with proper care. If you are moving plants, you should inform your movers about it well in advance so that they make necessary preparations.
Shipping plants is also commonly done and if plants have to be transported through air freight, you should ask the airlines about rules and regulations of moving plants. Airlines have strict rules with respect to moving plants and sometimes, you may not be allowed to move the plants. You should understand the regulations and stick to the rules.
Guide for moving plants
Each state in the United States has different policies with respect to moving plants. Once you have decided to take your plants along with you while relocating, contact the US department of agriculture to know about the moving plants requirements in the state to which you are moving. The agriculture department imposes regulations on moving plants to control pests that may destroy other plants and cash crops in the destination state.
Moving house plants
You need to decide whether you want to move your plants along with you. If you feel that the plants won't be able to survive your moving stress, you can consider giving away those plants to others. Some people even throw their plants once they have to move. If you want to take your plants with you, you have to take proper care for the plant for several weeks and months so that your plants can handle moving trauma.
If you are left with no other choice other than leaving your plants behind, take clippings of plant and original soil in jiffy bags without sealing the bags. This will keep the clippings alive when you move to your new destination. Then, you can use the clippings to replant using vermiculate and lots of water.
Many moving companies now come forward to handle moving plants when your destination is within 200 miles or it can be reached within a day of moving. When you ask moving companies to take care of the plants, consider the temperature of moving days. Extreme winter or extreme summer can severely damage your plants, as plants can't survive more than 95 degrees or less than 35 degrees Fahrenheit.
You should start preparing your plants for moving several weeks before moving. Start with pruning the plants. Ferns and succulents must not be pruned. Pruning helps you to reduce plant size so as to pack the plants easily. You must refer to a gardening book to understand the right way of pruning your plants. Buy non breakable plastic containers and repot your potted plants so that you can ensure the potted plants are not damaged.
When you are using new pots for repotting plants, wash the pots thoroughly. Pests are very common in pots and hence, you should always keep the pots free from pests that may destroy your plants. Terracotta pots are generally used for potted plants, but these pots can break easily. Hence, they are not suitable for moving. Use non breakable pots to move plants easily. A week before moving, you should kill pests using bug strip or bug powder. Place plants in a plastic bag and seal the bag with bug killers so as to eliminate all types of pests completely.
Large boxes must be used for packing potted plants. Dry the pots and make sure that excess water is not available which may damage the box used for packing. When you are moving large plants, you don’t want them to get damaged or broken and hence use canes and tie the plants.
During transportation, your plants shouldn’t be allowed to dry out. To keep the soil wet, use moistened newspaper around the sand and wrap the sand with moist paper to retain moisture. Also, while packing plants inside boxes, poke holes in the box to keep the air flowing to the plants. This care must be taken for both house plants and garden plants.
At the time of unloading too, care should be taken when you are moving plants. You should unpack the boxes slowly because sudden sun light may affect the life of your plants. When you are moving house plants, you can gradually let the plant stand outside because these house plants can live for a week without sunlight if adequate temperature and moisture is available.
Moving guide for garden plants
House plants can be easily moved, as most of them will be potted plants. However, garden plants are entirely different. To move garden plants, you should dig the plants out of soil, pack them, move them and then replant them at your new destination. Certain plants can't be uprooted for moving. Before deciding to move your garden plants, get expert advice from horticulture store about the plants and possibility of moving your garden plants.
Your old home may have a different condition and your new home may have different soil and temperature. You should be sure that the garden plants could survive well in the soil and temperature in your new destination. There is no point in moving garden plants if you are not certain whether the plants will survive in the new location. We recommend you to follow our moving garden plants guide to move your garden plants with ease.
Dig the plant out carefully around the root of the plant without damaging the root ball. Use necessary garden tools to uproot the plant. Then, place the plant in a plastic bag and use a pest control strip. This must be done on the day of your move. You need to keep the plastic bag with pest control on for at least 6 hours to kill all pests. Before sealing the bag, ensure that soil around the root ball is moist.
Once you reach your destination, you should start planting garden plants. Before planting the plants, check the pH level of the soil at the destination and use necessary fertilizers to balance pH level of the soil. Then, replant the garden plants you have moved. You have to constantly monitor the plants and apply water regularly. You should give ample time for your plants to settle down in the new environment.
Planning for a quick move
Normally, you have to look for movers before a couple of months of relocation. This will give you ample time to move everything properly. However, life never goes on smoothly as we normally expect. You may have various reasons and you want the movers to move your home NOW. In the world of hurry, you can definitely find whatever you want and this is true with moves too.
- Don’t panic because you can find movers even at the last minute of moving.
- You can't be stringent in terms of moving cost when you are moving in a hurry. Moving companies will ask for premium charges to move quickly. This cost may rise to a huge figure if you are doing long distance moving.
- Communicate well with the mover. If you want to move on any particular date, talk about it with the mover.
- Don’t explicitly show the movers that you are desperate to find one. The moving companies must know that you are talking to several movers to do the last minute moving.
- Just as in the case of normal move, you need to be organized for a rushed move. Prepare goods to be moved at the earliest. You can pack on your own too, but make sure that packed items will be ready when the movers come to your home. Don’t try to pack everything and discard all items you may not want. This way, you can get correct estimates from your movers. To save time, ask the movers to do professional packing. Help the movers by making items ready to be packed. Appliances that must be disconnected must be kept ready before packing to complete moving quickly. Use a detailed moving checklist for perfect planning.
- Don’t settle down for the first mover. Take your time to choose a reliable company because you have to trust the company with all valuable items. Follow the following tips to select a good moving company in a limited time:
- If possible, try to get 3 in home moving estimates. If time doesn’t permit, ask the movers about moving cost explaining things to be moved.
- Never settle down for the lowest bid.
- Some companies will take your moving order and outsource moving to another company. This is not desirable and hence, make sure that the mover you are talking to will actually do the move.
- The moving company with which you are dealing must have a registered local office. This will greatly help you in planning your move.
- ACCESSORIAL (ADDITIONAL) SERVICES – Extra moving services like packing, appliance servicing, unpacking, or piano moving, stair carries or other additional services that may be required for moving. These services cost extra moving fees.

- AGENT - a local representative moving company authorized to act on behalf of a national company.
- APPLIANCE SERVICE – Preparing appliances and electronics for packing and moving.
- BILL OF LADING – It is the receipt for all goods you move and it is the moving contract. Don’t sign bill of lading unless you understand every stated term. Also, don’t misplace this essential piece of document.

Total cost of moving will be stated on the estimate and this is computed based on quantity of shipment and services required. A non-binding estimate is an approximate estimate computed depending on estimated weight of shipment and services required. The cost actually charged at the end will be different from the cost quoted in the nonbinding estimate.
- CARRIER – The company which transports all your packed goods.
- C.O.D. – The person who placed moving order is required to pay the transporter at the time of delivery at the destination.

- SHUTTLE SERVICE – When mover’s long hauling trucks can't be used in your neighborhood, smaller vehicles must be used by movers to make the move possible and this requires extra charge.
- STORAGE-IN-TRANSIT (SIT) – If for some conditions like your home not ready, you may need to store goods in a temporary warehouse and you must pay for the SIT service if you want. You can't store goods for more than 90 days and you have to deal with final delivery charges apart from warehouse handling fees.
- TARIFF – A published list containing prices of movers, their regulations, charges, rates and fees for doing interstate long distance moves. This is mandatory for all movers.
- VALUATION – The degree of how much your shipment is worth. This valuation charge will compensate for your mover if the mover is assuming greater liability for the shipment other than the basic liability.
- WAREHOUSE HANDLING – Movers must be paid additional charges for providing SIT transit. This is because movers have to place and remove your household items in the warehouse for SIT service.
TO AVOID MOVERS SCAM
How to avoid getting scammed by discreditable movers?
Picking the right movers is a difficult task when you have numerous choices of movers available in the industry. The market is filled with innumerable movers who pounce on the opportunity to catch their victim for a scam, especially if you are not aware of their fraudulent tricks played on the customers.
There was a segment on “How to Avoid being scammed by Movers” in the recent The Today Show. It is very important to identify the fraudulent companies for you to avoid the scams. Hence, it becomes very critical to know the top scams that are attempted by different movers. Given below is a list of top scams pointed out by The Today Show.
- The Hostage
- Bait and Switch
- Trumped Up Delivery Charges
- Late (or Never) Delivery
- Reckless Abandonment
The Hostage:
This is like a typical hostage situation wherein the mover first gives an estimate and takes your belongings. Once the items are in their hands, they add on extra charges which in many cases can be doubling or tripling of the estimates. These additional cost will be quoted with some reasons which you may not be able to argue and the belongings will not be released unless and until you concede and pay the amount.
Bait and Switch:
As the name claims, in this case the mover gives you a quote initially, arranges the deal and in the last minute switches you into a higher cost deal. The cost you will need to bear will be nowhere close to the original quote which you had agreed into.
Trumped up Delivery charges:
In this case, the mover trumps up the charges with some baseless reasons. For example, the mover will agree to a cost and after your valuables are loaded, will claim that the cost did not include the packing materials. In some cases, the mover will first load the belongings in the truck. Later, they will claim extra charges stating that the original estimate was given based on weight and the belongings actually exceed in cubic feet. Since, in these cases you will not be able to verify the credentials you are forced to pay the charges and get the belongings released.
Late (or Never) Delivery:
This is more of bad service issue. The mover will visit your home, pack the belongings, load them into the truck and give you the date and time at which it will be delivered. But the goods are not delivered “on-time”. The mover calls you only to say that your goods are at the back of the truck and cannot be delivered until the furniture of another customer loaded in the front is delivered. This scam causes a lot of stress as you do not know when the goods will be delivered and have to make temporary arrangements. There is also a possibility of the mover having license violation and the vehicle being seized by the Department of Transportation. In such cases, the goods remain stuck in the truck until the case is resolved which will several weeks together.
Reckless Abandonment:
When you do not verify the credentials of the mover completely, the probability of reckless abandonment is high. The mover packs the belongings, loads the truck and takes the money also for moving. He then closes the shop and disappears becoming untraceable. The belongings are abandoned by him along with the truck or sometimes in a storage facility. Even if you are able to trace the goods which is very difficult, you may have to shell out lots of money before the goods are handed over to you from the storage facility.
Watch out for the traps of Discreditable movers:
Moving doesn't have to be stressful to you if you choose the right movers. Now that you are aware of the most common scams executed by unscrupulous movers, let us discuss on some helpful tips using which you will be able to identify the genuine movers. This can help you stay away from the trap laid by the discreditable movers and help in successful relocation:
- Ask your Neighbours and friends: The best source to a reputable mover would be your neighbours and friends. Check in the neighbourhood and ask for recommendations from them. Most reliable and experienced movers are usually popular in the neighbourhood.
- Ask your Real Estate Agent: Another good source would be the real estate agents who can suggest you some reliable movers as they deal with lot of customers and have a fair idea about the service of each mover.
- Obtain Online Estimate: The very first step in selecting a mover would be to get online estimates from various sites to get a fair idea on the approximate cost involved. Most of these estimates are provided absolutely FREE !
- Check the mover's address: Most of the fraudulent movers will provide you with an address which does not exist. Make sure you verify that the address provided by the mover is real by googling it or driving up to the location in person.
- Get In-Home estimates: It has been best recommended that atleast three in-home estimates are to be obtained before you finalise on the mover. Getting estimates from different movers will help in identifying the fraudulent movers who charge exorbitant rates.
- Price based on weight and not cubic feet: Choose the mover who charges you based on weight of the belongings and not on the basis of cubic feet.
- Reputation of the mover: Do a check on the reputation of the mover by contacting the local rating agency like Better Business Bureau and also check on the number of complaint received against them.
Protect yourself from movers scams!!
Even after you choose the mover, there are certain steps which you can take to avoid getting into the scams of the movers. Note the following points to stay precautious and avoid doing certain things to save yourself from the scam.
- Sign only a complete contract : Whatever the mover says do not sign any contract which has blank columns. When we would not sign any loan agreement or business contract with blanks, how can we sign a moving contract with unfilled columns? Make sure the contract is complete in all aspects before signing.
- Do not pay in CASH: Never agree to pay in cash to the mover. You will not have any proof of having paid in cash in case of disputes. It is dangerous in cased where you don't receive your goods but you have paid the amount in cash for which there is no evidence of transaction.
- Not a skinny contract: The contract should not be a one pager or a skinny contract. Make sure it has all the terms and conditions clearly mentioned including a complete list of all your belongings. It comes handy in case of any disputes.
- No upfront deposits: If the mover asks for any kind of deposit upfront then there is something shady about him. There may be a plan of taking your money and disappearing with or without your belongings. Reconsider your option of switching to a different mover in such cases.
- Extra Insurance: Always ask for extra or additional insurance coverage for your belongings which are valuable and even otherwise. It will offer you full protection should something happen to your goods while moving. Most of reputable movers will have the additional insurance scheme available for their customers. Just go for it.
- Read the claims policy: Ask the mover for the process of claims and read them thoroughly. You do not want to deal with a mover who has a tedious process of claims which is very stressful. Also, the process should be transparent and quick to settle.
- Choose the company with real address: Do not fall for the rogue mover dealing only through the website who will not have real address. A reputable mover will definitely not operate without a proper place of business.
- Check for the brand on the truck: A reputable mover will always have his truck branded with the company's name and logo. Hence, check for the company logo and name on the truck when the belongings are being loaded.
Moving in itself will be very stressful as you need to undergo a change in lifestyle, getting accustomed to the new place probably with a new job etc. Hence, the last thing you would want to worry about is dealing with the mover. UNPACKING
Most of us think that moving is almost done once the boxes are unloaded in your new home and that the unpacking is just a couple of hours’ job. But, little do we realise that the major part of moving just begins when you start unpacking. The new house is the place where you are going to live and it is important that it is neatly arranged and things set in the right place. The new home should give you the much needed “at home” feeling especially in the initial phases of moving since relocation to a new place is sure to affect you mentally.
Boxes everywhere!!
Normally, a house would look spacious when its empty but after you unpack, it may so happen that you have to look for self storage facilities to put in a few boxes which cannot fit in the house. Get ready to see boxes everywhere in the house and do not get worried. If you are present when the truck is getting loaded, inform the movers to put in boxes pertaining to kitchen at the last so that they will be the first to get unloaded. It is very common that the boxes get mixed up and land in entirely different rooms no matter how bold the letterings are on the box.
First rooms first!
Always make the most use of the service of the movers before they leave. Ensure that the huge items like your sofa, bed and bed frames are left at the places where they have to be. It would be almost impossible for you to move them around from one room to another. This is also important for piano moving. Also, it is safe to let the professionals handle valuable items like piano rather than us handling them.
Another best idea would be to get the kitchen set first as your body would soon get hungry for the first meal especially if you have children. The next important room would be to get your bedroom set for the first night. You do not want to sleep on the carpet with boxes lying aroud you. Place all the boxes which are unpacked in a separate room which is used the least so that the other rooms are liveable.
Relax!
All of us get the urge to unpack all the boxes on the same day and set our new home. But, don’t get too hard on yourself. Resist the temptation and try to relax for some time. You need a break both mentally and physically after the long travel and lots of unpacking. Leave the “not so important” boxes for the next day and take rest. Sometimes, it is advisable to arrange your deck first so that you have the right spot to sit and enjoy when you are tired. After a hectic day of work and with no mood to cook, you can order some food and enjoy with family at the deck. Being smart and arranging for some beer and wine in advance will also be a good idea. So, do not try to complete everything on the same day and take it easy.

MOVING RATES
Moving is an exercise that takes up a lot of time, energy, effort and your hard earned money. Hence it is imminent that you are aware of some of the basic principles that are followed while fixing the various moving rates.
Moving rates are calculated on the basis of various categorical specifications. Generally moving rates are established on the basis of service that is being made use of. Amongst the various kinds of moving services that are provided by relocation experts, ground shipping is the most widely used mode of transportation. If your goods are being transported as boxed or crated items, the moving rates are calculated at a fixed rate per shipment that measures to a specific weight and is traveling more than 100 miles. Here the moving rate goes up based on the total weight and distance covered.
In case of long-distance small moves where the number of items is somewhere between 1-10 that can weigh up to 1000 lbs, the moving rates are different. This kind of moving is the best suited for the relocation of large household items.
The moving rate scenario totally changes in case of local moving. Here the rates are charged mainly on hourly basis and also on the number of helpers who may be required. Hence the total moving expenditure in this case is calculated based on the size of the moving crew and also the duration on an hourly basis. The moving company basically decides on the number of men required after discussing the entire issue with the client that covers the various important aspects of moving like the number of items to be moved, distance to be covered etc. Most of the moving firms are experienced and licensed relocation specialist and do not impose any fuel surcharge or additional moving charges for things like liftgates or hand trucks.
In cases of long-distance large moves, the moving rates depend on hourly calculations, volume or both. The client saves a lot of money if he does the loading and unloading himself and thereby would be required to pay only for the space that his goods are going to occupy in the truck. However if he opts for loading and unloading, a small charge is levied in addition to the charge for the space occupied in the truck.
Clients need to exercise caution while choosing a moving company. Apart from considering the genuineness, dependability and previous track record of the company, the customer must perform an accurate check about the pricing levels of the moving company. It needs to be verified if the company has all its moving rates in writing with no additional surprise rates. A well trained and genuine moving company will provide an exhaustive break-up of the various components that are considered while arriving at the final moving rate like the beginning weight of the truck, the final loaded weight of the truck, a list of the moving equipments (moving blankets, shrink wraps tool box etc), fuel, surcharge, toll, ferry, permits, loading as well as unloading charges .

All the available options regarding inter-state piano moving need to be thoroughly assessed before we actually transport our musical instrument. This is especially true in case of an expensive musical instrument like the piano. We have to remember one important thing while moving a piano. Given below is an interesting quote from Larry Fine in The Piano Book. “The task of moving a piano is not just a matter of weight. The asymmetric shape, the fragility of the outer cabinet and the inner mechanics, the uneven distribution of parts- all this and more demands not only proper equipment but also an understanding of the unique dynamics of balance and inertia that pianos pose”. “Don’t take chances, hire a professional”.
